Long was born in Jiangxi province, China. He obtained his BE degree in bioinformatics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in 2010. He then moved to Fudan University, where he obtained his PhD degree in inorganic chemistry under the guidance of Professor Guo-Xin Jin in 2017, working on supramolecular organometallic frameworks based on half-sandwich post-transition metal (Ir/Rh) fragments. In July 2017, Long moved to Northwestern University as a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart, working on the rational design of catenanes and rotaxanes using radical-radical interactions.
