A Link to the Past - Following his King Faisal Memorial Lecture on "The Mechanical Bond in Chemistry" at the King Abd Al-Aziz City of Science and Technology in Riyadh on Tuesday 17 April 2007, Fraser was presented with the Jabir ibn Hayyan (Geber) Medal by the Saudi Chemical Society. Jabir ibn Hayyan was a prominent Arab alchemist in the 8th Century. He has been referred to as "the father of Arab Chemistry." He is widely credited with the introduction of the experimental method into alchemy, and with the invention of numerous important processes still used in modern chemistry today. "The first essential in chemistry," he said, "is that you should perform practical work and conduct experiments, for he who performs not practical work nor makes experiments will never attain the least degree of mastery."
