Science in Highly–Charged Stable Organic Radicals - The discovery of a new class of stable organic radicals, which can accept up to eight electrons and can be switched between diamagnetic and paramagnetic states, is the outcome of a multidisciplinary effort from Northwestern, CalTech, St Andrews, KAIST, and KACST. This exotic molecule is comprised of two interlocked cyclobis(paraquat–p–phenylene) rings which enforeces close electrostatic interactions between several positive charges. This new compound, which is described in the 25 January 2013 issue of the journal Science and is highlighted in Science Perspective, C&EN and RSC Chemistry World magazines, Nature Chemistry, and Nature Middle East, introduces the concept of designing organic molecules with an immense amount of charge in order to synthesize stable magnetic organic materials.
